n8n Website Chatbot Template: AI Chat for Any Site
Most website chat widgets are either a contact form in disguise or a monthly subscription that grows with every conversation. If you already use n8n, there's a third option: run the chatbot as an n8n workflow, so your data stays in your own n8n and the AI provider is your choice. This guide covers what a good website chatbot should do, how an n8n-based one plugs into WordPress, Shopify, Wix and plain HTML sites, what it costs to run, and an honest look at building your own versus starting from the Website AI Chatbot PRO template.
Ready-made template: Website AI Chatbot PRO (n8n) · From $99View →What a website AI chatbot should do
The point of a chatbot is to answer the questions your visitors ask every day, accurately, even at 2 a.m. That means it should answer from your website, FAQ and documents, reply in the visitor's language, and know when to hand off to a human. The Website AI Chatbot PRO learns your home page and up to 12 linked pages during setup, and you can teach it more later by sending a PDF, pasting a fact or a page link. On top of answering, it can collect leads (a name, email and phone form before the chat that you can make optional, required or off), book appointments in its own calendar with no double bookings, show a 'Talk on WhatsApp' button, and send you a daily report of messages, visitors, leads, bookings and the latest questions.
Who it is for
Any business whose website gets the same questions over and over: online stores on WooCommerce or Shopify, clinics, salons, restaurants, agencies, coaches, real estate and SaaS. For online stores it goes further: it can find products ('do you have a blue shirt under $30?') with price, stock and a link, and check order status — but only when the visitor gives both the order number and the email used for the order. Store access is read-only: a read-only REST key on WooCommerce, or a read-only Admin API token on Shopify.
How it fits on your site
The chatbot is one self-contained code snippet with no outside scripts. On a plain HTML site you paste it before the closing body tag. On WordPress you use the free WPCode plugin (Header & Footer → Footer). On Shopify it goes in theme.liquid before the closing body tag. On Wix, Squarespace and Webflow it goes in the custom code footer setting. The setup wizard prints the code and these steps at the end. You also get a shareable full-page chat link for your Instagram bio, emails or QR codes, and the chat window uses your brand colour, logo and welcome message.
Safety and running costs
A chatbot that makes things up is worse than none. This one tells visitors it is an AI assistant, answers only about your business, and never invents prices, stock or offers. Contact details are saved only when a visitor gives them, old chats are deleted after 90 days by default, and a per-visitor rate limit plus a daily message cap protect your AI quota. The template itself has no running cost and the default AI, Groq, has a free tier (Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude, OpenRouter and Ollama also work, with a backup model if the main one fails). One thing to know if you use n8n Cloud: every chat message is one n8n execution, which counts towards your plan's monthly limit. Self-hosted n8n has no execution limit.
Build it yourself or buy the template?
n8n has an AI agent node and a chat trigger, so a basic Q&A bot is a reasonable weekend project. What takes longer is everything around it: crawling and refreshing your site content, a styled embeddable widget, lead capture with alerts, safe order lookups, a booking calendar, rate limiting, an owner panel and a way to ship updates without breaking your settings. If you want to learn n8n, build it. If you want it working on your site this week, the Website AI Chatbot PRO is $99 (Basic) — the workflow file with a 6-step setup wizard and free updates — or $199 (Done-for-you), where the team connects your AI, alerts and shop, adds the chat to your website and tests it live with you in 1–2 working days. It is sold as a final sale, so check the requirements first.
Step-by-step: Website chatbot + n8n
- 1Make sure n8n 2.x is running on an https:// address (self-hosted or n8n Cloud).
- 2Get an AI key — Groq is free and the default — plus a Telegram bot and/or an SMTP email account for alerts.
- 3If you run a store, create a read-only WooCommerce REST key or a Shopify token with read_products and read_orders.
- 4Import the workflow, click Start and complete the 6-step wizard: n8n, your business, look and feel, AI, online shop, alerts.
- 5Paste the snippet the wizard gives you into your site (WPCode on WordPress, theme.liquid on Shopify, custom code on Wix, Squarespace or Webflow).
- 6Ask it a few real customer questions from the owner panel with /test, teach it any missing facts, then go live.
FAQ
Does the chatbot work on WordPress and Shopify?
Yes. It works on any website: WordPress (via the free WPCode plugin), Shopify (theme.liquid), Wix, Squarespace, Webflow and plain HTML. The setup wizard prints the exact steps.
Can it look up orders for customers?
For WooCommerce and Shopify stores, yes — but it shows an order only when the visitor gives the order number and the email used for that order. Store access uses read-only keys.
Will it invent answers?
It is designed to answer only about your business from your own website, FAQ and documents, and never to invent prices, stock or offers. When someone asks for a person or is unhappy, it takes their contact details and alerts your team.
How do I manage it after setup?
Alerts and the daily report go to Telegram, email or both. A private PIN-protected owner panel lets you test questions, teach facts, learn a web page, download leads as CSV, get the embed code and install updates.
Is there a monthly fee?
Not from the template. Groq's free tier covers the AI by default. If you're on n8n Cloud, each chat message uses one execution from your plan; self-hosted n8n is unlimited.
